About eSIM service

eSIM, or embedded SIM, is a global technology for remotely configuring a mobile device's SIM card. Many of the latest smartphones support the eSIM feature. An eSIM is a small electronic chip integrated into your phone or device that performs the same function as small plastic SIM cards.
You can store multiple operator profiles and switch between them remotely, while also using a physical SIM. Benefits include easy setup, remote activation, dual SIM use, standalone device functionality. Various devices support eSIM, but it's tied to one device.
To activate an eSIM profile, you must scan the QR code that comes with the purchase of the eSIM. Once you scan this QR code you will be able to access the cellular services on your cell phone, as if you had a regular SIM card.
Telecom Armenia OJSC lets users buy eSIM cards with the help of My Team mobile app, with terms for individuals and citizens of Armenia. To discover more about the service, please scroll down.

 

1. eSIM Description

eSIM or embedded SIM card is a global technology that provides remote configuration of the SIM card of a mobile device. Unlike a traditional SIM card, it is already built into the device (see below for a detailed list) and fully works in digital format.

eSIM allows storing multiple operator profiles on the device at the same time and switching between them remotely but only one eSIM can be used. Simultaneous use of a physical SIM and an eSIM card on the same mobile device is possible.

In addition to mobile devices supporting the technology, mobile communication support is also available on devices such as tablets, smartwatches, fitness bracelets, portable systems, and other devices. However, simultaneous use of the same eSIM on two or more devices is not possible; the eSIM is tied to a specific device, so in this case, it is necessary to connect different unique eSIM cards for each device.

The online service of Telecom Armenia OJSC provides an opportunity for users to purchase a SIM card in eSIM format through the My Team mobile application, without visiting the service office; remote identification, subscriber registration, and activation of the service occur using a mobile application. The operator provides an opportunity to securely download the application for the eSIM card to the subscriber's device.

Terms of delivery via the My Team mobile app:

  • The eSIM card is available to individuals and citizens of the Republic of Armenia;
  • The eSIM card is available for current and new subscribers;
  • The eSIM card supports a prepaid tariff plan;
  • Make sure that the mobile device supports eSIM technology;
  • Complete online identity verification in a mobile app;
  • Pay for the purchase of an eSIM card via the mobile app;
  • Get a QR code for activation by email.

  • Easy device setup without the need to insert or replace a SIM card;
  • Remote activation and the ability to switch between mobile service providers;
  • Dual SIM cards: the ability to combine an eSIM and a SIM card;
  • Devices that can work independently of a linked smartphone, with their own subscriptions;

2. eSIM Acquisition

The eSIM card can be registered through the My Team mobile application upon successful online identification of an individual, only with prepaid tariff plans of Telecom Armenia OJSC for voice and non-voice mobile communication services.

It is important to note that the Mobile ID service cannot be activated on an eSIM number, the Mobile ID service will not work even if the existing SIM card is replaced with an eSIM card since the Mobile ID technology is not compatible with eSIM. However, the subscriber can purchase an additional number in the eSIM format and use two numbers at the same time, i.e. a physical SIM with the connected Mobile ID service and an eSIM.

To activate eSIM, do the following:

1) Purchase an eSIM card

The eSIM card has a serial number, like a regular SIM card, in the 89374010003XXXXXXX format.

2) Obtain a special QR code

The card is activated by scanning a QR code, which will be provided electronically after the sale, on which the serial number will also be indicated as the eSIM card number.   To scan the code, forward it to another device if automatic installation is not possible. For the security of your data, do not send the QR code to strangers.

3) Open the mobile connection settings on your smartphone, scan the QR code, download, and confirm the subscription

Scanning the QR code and activating the eSIM should be done through the settings of the very smartphone. To activate the eSIM card, it is very important to have a stable Internet connection via Wi-Fi at the time of scanning the QR code. The instructions for activating eSIM will depend on the operating system of the device.

  • For iOS
    • Go to your phone's settings and select the "Cellular" option.
    • When you are in the "Cellular" section, go to the "Add cellular tariff" section.
    • Scan the QR code using the camera.
    • After scanning the QR code, select "Add cellular tariff."
    • Click OK and you're done.
    • To activate eSIM manually, on the QR code scanner page, select "Enter data manually" and enter the details of the received code in the appropriate field.
  • For Android
    • Go to your phone's settings.
    • Select "Connections" and go to "SIM Card Manager."
    • When you are in the "SIM Card Manager" section, select "Add mobile tariff."
    • Scan the QR code and when you're done, click "Use and Add."
    • To activate eSIM manually, on the QR code scanner page, select "Enter code" and enter the details of the received code in the appropriate field.

The same eSIM card can be reactivated up to 5 times; for example, if the downloaded profile was deleted from the smartphone, it can be restored. It is also possible to delete a profile from one smartphone in order to register it on another one by scanning an existing QR code.

The process of replacing an eSIM card is no different from the process of replacing a regular SIM card. Changing the number or format is available in all Telecom Armenia service points.

eSIM can be deleted through the settings of your smartphone, but the number itself will remain active. To cancel it, you should contact the service point and terminate the contract.

A number of laptops and smart watches also have eSIM compatibility.

You can purchase eSIM through the My Team mobile app from any device, including a device that does not support eSIM technology. However, activation of the purchased number in eSIM format will only be available on a device that supports this technology (see the list of devices above).

 

4. Online Identification

Digital Identification is a modular user identity verification service available on iOS and Android platforms through the My Team mobile app.

The principle of digital identification is based on remote verification of the user's identity by reading and verifying an identity document (ID card or passport) and ensuring that the user who holds it is the same one who is specified in the identity document through the recognition of facial biometrics and their comparison with each other via online shooting.

To complete the remote identification procedure, do the following:

  • Accept Personal Data Processing Agreement;
  • Grant the application access to the camera of the mobile device;
  • Provide sufficient lighting conditions;
  • Ensure the absence of foreign objects and persons during the shooting;
  • Prepare an identity document;
  • The identity document should be original, valid during the process, and held by the person undergoing identification;
  • The person undergoing identification should be at least 16 years old.

 

5. Personal Data Processing

When undergoing remote identification, the user gives his/her consent to personal data processing in accordance with the law. The technology used by VERIDAS DIGITAL AUTHENTICATION SOLUTION, S.L meets the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), is certified according to ISO/IEC 27001, and complies with the Privacy Policy of Telecom Armenia OJSC (more about the privacy policy at https://www.telecomarmenia.am/en/privacy-policy ). VERIDAS, acting as a data processor, undertakes to adhere to the provisions of the RA Law "On Personal Data Protection" and the Privacy Policy of Telecom Armenia OJSC.
